Atishi: News

Atishi is an activist, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) politician, and Member of the Delhi legislative assembly. She has done her BA in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and pursued further education at the University of Oxford, England. Atishi joined the AAP upon its formation in 2013 and has worked with several NGOs and not-for-profit organizations in the field of education. She has served as an Advisor to the Delhi Education Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, playing an important role in the AAP government’s education policy. Daughter of Delhi University professors Vijay Singh and Tripti Wahi, Atishi was given the second name "Marlena" after Communist icons Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. It was dropped, however, in 2018, and was replaced with the family surname "Singh’ "which the opposition alleged was aimed at garnering votes on a caste basis. She lost the 2019 Lok Sabha election from East Delhi to BJP’s Gautam Gambhir but stood victorious from Kalkaji in the 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections.
